Hold Fast: White Water Rapids Ahead

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. Hebrews 10:23

Repeatedly during our Colorado River rafting expedition, we heard our captains cry out,  “Hold on tight with both hands!” Following their admonition throughout our 280 mile trek, our group traversed some of the biggest and most difficult white water rapids in North America in safety.

Last Sunday, the day after our trip, as Ken and I were walking and praying together, “hold fast” echoed through the chambers of my heart. The “Captain of the Lord’s Host” was exhorting me to  “… hold fast the confession of my hope without wavering…”  As God spoke, I felt my hands ready and willing to grasp as tightly as I could and as long as needed “the ropes” securely attached to His raft. I understood like never before that His Words, the ropes He provided for me to hold unto, were for my safety – for my salvation.

God knows the colossal waves that are up ahead for each one of us. He does not want us to be thrown out of the boat – to be thrown into the turbulent waters to be tossed to and fro by them or to be sucked under by one of the strong eddies never to surface again. Rather, He desires for us to dwell safely in His boat – to dwell safely in Christ.  (See Prov. 1:33)

He desires for us to dwell safely in His boat – to dwell safely in Christ.

Therefore, God admonishes us to make that quality decision that we will follow His command to “hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering.” Confession means saying the same thing with our mouth that God says in His Word. Apart from the “white water rapids” of life, the confession of God’s Word could be easy.  But, we have a real enemy who exerts every kind of opposition and pressure against us to cause us to “let go” of God’s Word and to “waver” in our confession, so that we are thrown out of HIs boat – the place of our salvation in Christ.

Recognize that no matter what the level of difficulty is of the “white water rapid” you are facing – no matter how dark the situation is, no matter how great the problem is – if you will actively “hold fast the confession of your hope without wavering” believing that “He Who promised is faithful,” you will experience His saving grace.

In Christ’s boat,

Sue Burdullis
